The Story Behind The Story: Children's Books About Diversity and Inclusion

No Such Thing As Normal speaks to the curiosities and difficult questions that arise in a world full of difficult questions. Equipped with discussion questions, this story provides a creative, honest and interactive way to instill dignity and respect for all people.

Story-telling is perhaps the most powerful thing we can do, and yet one of the most underestimated. Why is there such an immense power in sharing our stories? There is value here because it brings understanding and awareness. Many times, people don’t know what they don’t know. Debunking myths and educating others helps reduce fear of the unknown, especially when it comes to disabilities.

My heart for writing this book came from experiences with my son who has different needs as well. I wanted to be able to speak into the lives of kiddos both with a disability, and without. I noticed a lack in children's books about diversity and inclusion. So I created one! My hope is to show kids who live WITH a difference, a disability or a diagnosis that they can do ANYTHING. I also hope to speak to kiddos that don’t necessarily have a disability--that those who are different from them are amazing people, and make this world a beautiful place. I wanted to show both of my children that their lives are equally valuable, despite their different talents and abilities. My children’s book for kids No Such Thing as Normal was the tool I used to share this. And not just for my children, but the entire world.

Do you have children? Then you need this book! There’s often a misconception that this book is for special needs children. While we did write this book with ALL in mind and with hopes that children with differences or disabilities would see differences represented on our pages and feel like they play an important part in our world, we had bigger hopes that this book would be a resource for those who don’t have experience with living with a diagnosis or disability. Our hope is every home would have a tool like this to educate the younger generation.
